The central question

“Does a person deserve to understand the truth about their own life, even when that understanding arrives too late to alter it?”

This is not simply a memoir of undercover policing. It is an examination of masking, usefulness and the hidden cost of becoming whatever the moment required.

01

The life beneath the work

A violent childhood, cultural dislocation and the early construction of a mask.

02

When difference became useful

Observation, restraint and pattern recognition found an unlikely purpose undercover.

03

The meaning of late recognition

An autism explanation could not change the past, but it changed how the past could be understood.

A memoir for readers seeking recognition

Undercover and Autistic is for autistic adults, people questioning a lifetime of difference and readers interested in how autism can remain unrecognised for decades.

It is not a clinical account of autism. It is one person's attempt to understand how masking, observation, solitude and vigilance shaped a life before there was an explanation for them.

When the Answer Comes Late

Late recognition cannot give me another life. It has given me a more truthful account of the one I lived. Society taught me to mask. The Police Department employed that mask. Both accepted the version of me that met their needs, while neither understood what maintaining that version required.

Recognition is not a cure, a rescue or a rewriting of history. It cannot change what happened. It can correct the interpretation of a life and replace shame based on misunderstanding with something closer to truth.
